Kevin Frost is a man on a mission. A deaf-blind speedskater, the Ottawa athlete will be going for the gold against able-bodied competitors when he competes at the third Eastern Regional short track ability meet, Saturday at Yardmen Arena.

The Quinte Blades Speedskating Club is hosting the event.

"It feels really good to go out there and give it my best," says Frost. "However, it feels even better when I bring home a medal."

But winning a medal is not Frost's only goal this weekend. He's trying to get speedskating recognized as a Paralympic Games event by 2010 and the more attention he can attract to that aim, the better.

According to publicist Matt Salvatore, Frost began speedskating in 2003 and quickly developed a passion for the sport.

"He now trains six days a week," says Salvatore.

In 2002, Frost was diagnosed with Usher Syndrome -- a rare genetic disorder that causes progressive hearing and vision loss.

But Frost hasn't let the condition lessen his drive on the ice.

"Kevin is really coming into his own on the ice," says coach Ron Guerard. "He continues to get faster with every race."

Several members fo the Blades will compete in Saturday's day-long even which begins at 9 a.m.

Spectators are encouraged to attend.
