Supporting Kevin Frost all the way
Members of Canines for a Cause joined Kevin
Frost
and his guide dog, Nemo, at the Lion's Club
walk-a-thon
last weekend.
It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and money to be a competitive
athlete. That's why Kevin Frost has teamed up with local organizations and
businesses in his quest to get speed skating sanctioned by the Paralympics.
Just this past weekend people laced up their sneakers and braved the chill
rain to walk for the deaf and blind speed skater's cause. Five groups
ventured out to the Lion's Club walk-a-thon on May 13 to raise money for
Frost.
Some even arrived at the walk with a banner pronouncing: "Supporting Kevin
Frost all the way."
"I didn't realize how much support I have until this walk-a-thon," Frost
said.
Frost indicated two schools, the Girl Guides, Canines for a Cause, and the
Orleans Recreation Centre where he works out, joined him for the walk.
Since his sport isn't sanctioned, Frost can't get funding to train. That's
why events like this are so important. Frost relies on a number of local
sponsors to get him through the year.
The support doesn't stop at walk-a-thons, though. On Tuesday May 23,
Topper's Pizza will do what they can to help Frost on his journey.
This is the second year in a row the speed skater and pizza chain have
partnered. For each $5 medium cheese and pepperoni pick-up order the Orleans
establishment sells on May 23, $2 will go to help Frost compete in speed
skating events next season.
"I've always been a really big believer in community involvement," said Greg
Paquin, business improvement consultant with Topper's Pizza. "This promo
just fell into our lap and I wanted to jump all over it."
Since joining the sport about two years ago, Frost has been helped by both
the community and event organizers. With the backing of his family, friends,
and the people of Orleans, Frost finished last season with an impressive
nine medals - three gold, two silver, and four bronze.
Frost said one of his most important races next year will be the World
Master's Long Track Championship, which will take place in Calgary. Like he
does at any event he attends, Frost will use the opportunity to bring more
awareness to his cause as he not only competes against able-bodied athletes,
but also works to get speed skating in the 2010 Paralympic Games.
Topper's Pizza is located at 5947 Jeanne d'Arc Blvd S, Orleans.
